The 5 kWp Solar PV system with 2400 Ah battery storage was installed at a residence in Bukoto, Kampala The main objective of the solar solution is to reduce grid electricity costs by supplying more than 60% of the power requirement on solar PV. The system is grid tied with battery storage and zero feed-in implementation which ensures that no electricity is fed back to the grid in the event of potential surplus production which is a regulatory requirement. The PV system was properly sized with a 5kW peak output in a region of about 5 sun hours. The total energy output is sufficient to supply more than 90% the power supply. With a battery storage of about 2400Ah, an uninterruptible power supply is guaranteed for a whole day, hence the storage can supply during the night or in little sunshine even in the absence of the grid.
βThe flexible and scalable design basis provides the opportunity to extend the system in future. This can be through the installation of more solar panels for increased generation capacity as well as the installation of more batteries for a bigger storage of solar electricity for night-time use and to provide a longer power back-up. β
Electricity bills have been reduced by 95%.
